Getting Started
Youth Soccer Coach Equipment List
Good sessions depend more on organization than expensive equipment. A ball for each player, enough markers to shape space, two team colors, and basic safety supplies cover nearly every beginner activity.
Build the equipment bag in order
Balls and inflation
Aim for one age-appropriate ball per player. Label team balls and carry a working pump plus spare needles.
Flat cones
Carry 20 to 30 flat markers in several colors. They create fields, gates, end zones, starting points, and safety boundaries.
Pinnies
Two contrasting colors are enough for most games. A third color helps identify neutral players.
Safety and planning
Bring league-approved first-aid supplies, emergency contacts, water for yourself, and a weather-protected copy of the plan.
Common mistakes
- Buying agility ladders before enough soccer balls
- Using tall cones where players may fall on them
- Arriving with uninflated balls
- Depending on portable goals without checking anchoring rules
Coach’s checklist
- Correct ball size
- 20–30 flat cones
- Two pinnie colors
- Pump and needles
- First-aid kit
- Practice plan
Questions new coaches ask
Do I need pop-up goals?
No. Cone gates and end lines work well. Pop-up goals are a useful later purchase if they can be secured according to manufacturer and league guidance.
How many soccer balls are enough?
One per player is ideal for skill work. One per pair can still support a useful session if the activities avoid lines.
