45-Minute Youth Soccer Practice Plan
A short practice can still include movement, skill repetition, a decision, and a game. Use one setup that changes slightly between blocks and place cones before players arrive.
Use every minute
01
5 minutes: arrival game
Begin with a ball immediately. Use dribbling gates or ball tag.
02
10 minutes: ball skill
Teach one turn, pass, or receiving action with many repetitions.
03
10 minutes: opposed decision
Add one defender or two scoring options.
04
20 minutes: game
Finish with 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 and quick restarts.
Common mistakes
- Spending ten minutes taking attendance
- Changing fields for every activity
- Adding a separate fitness block
- Cutting the game because earlier instructions ran long
Coach’s checklist
- Field set before arrival
- Four written time blocks
- Balls around the boundary
- Water available
- Backup game using same setup
Questions new coaches ask
Is 45 minutes enough?
Yes, especially for younger players. High activity and efficient transitions matter more than adding time.
What should I cut if practice starts late?
Shorten the unopposed skill block while preserving a decision game and meaningful free play.
