Practice Plans
Rainy-Day Soccer Practice Plan
Rain itself may not cancel practice, but lightning, unsafe surfaces, field closures, and league policy can. Never improvise around weather rules. If an approved indoor or covered space is available, adjust the ball and activities to protect people and property.
An approved indoor backup
Movement mirror
Partners copy balance, turns, and changes of direction without contact.
Ball mastery boxes
Use controlled touches with a futsal or foam ball appropriate for the surface.
Passing gates
Pairs pass through wide gates with attention to weight and first touch.
2v2 end lines
Remove shooting and score by stopping the ball on a line.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring lightning or field closure rules
- Using outdoor balls around windows
- Allowing sliding on indoor floors
- Choosing a backup site without permission
Coach’s checklist
- League weather policy
- Approved indoor location
- Surface-safe ball
- No-shoot boundary
- Family cancellation message
Questions new coaches ask
Can children practice during light rain?
Follow league and facility policy. Surface safety, temperature, visibility, thunder, and field preservation all matter.
What if no backup space exists?
Cancel clearly and early. Optionally share a safe five-minute individual ball challenge for home.
