Youth Soccer Defending Practice

Young defenders often run directly at the ball and get beaten by the attacker’s first move. Teach them to arrive under control, protect the dangerous route, watch the ball, and recognize when to tackle.

Build confident 1v1 defending

01

Mirror movement

Without a ball, one player leads and the defender stays balanced and connected.

02

Protect a gate

The attacker dribbles toward either gate while the defender delays and shows away from danger.

03

1v1 to counter goals

When the defender wins the ball, that player immediately attacks a small counter goal.

04

2v2 game

Add cover and communication without lengthy positional instruction.

Common mistakes

  • Diving into tackles
  • Standing upright with feet together
  • Stopping after winning possession
  • Praising only physical strength

Coach’s checklist

  • Safe tackling standard
  • Approach under control
  • Side-on stance
  • Counter target
  • Short competitive rounds

Questions new coaches ask

What is the first defending cue?

Protect the dangerous route and arrive balanced. A delayed attacker may allow teammates to recover.

Should young defenders kick the ball away?

Safety may require it, but training should also reward winning possession and finding a useful next action.
