Youth Soccer Dribbling Practice
Dribbling is more than performing moves around cones. Players need to control the ball, look up, change direction, protect it, and accelerate when space opens. Progress quickly from repetition to an opponent.
Build dribbling in four layers
01
Explore
Each player moves through a grid using both feet and different surfaces.
02
Turn through gates
Approach under control, use a pullback or cut, and accelerate away.
03
Choose in 1v1
Two goals force the attacker to read the defender and change the plan.
04
Find moments in 3v3
Praise dribbling that creates space, beats pressure, or protects possession.
Common mistakes
- Eyes fixed on the ball
- Moves without acceleration
- Cone patterns with no decision
- Discouraging all dribbling in favor of passing
Coach’s checklist
- Ball per player
- Wide gates
- Two-goal 1v1 fields
- Short rounds
- Cue: close, look, explode
Questions new coaches ask
How many dribbling moves should I teach?
Teach one or two useful turns at a time, then allow players to choose and apply them against pressure.
When should players pass instead?
Help players recognize pressure, open teammates, and space. The game should allow both dribbling and passing decisions.
